007 - Pedarox
Morning
The party wakes up as sunlight spills through Aggie's cabin windows.
Elysia cheerfully says, "Good morning!"
Aggie asks, "How did you sleep?"
"Well."
Aggie cooks up some of the firesnakes' eggs for breakfast. She thanks everyone for fetching her ingredients.
Rafael asks if she has heard rumors of undead, especially vampires, since she mentioned an interest in life extension.
She answers, "As it happens, yes, in Pedarox. Since there will be a full moon in a few days, you can expect that activity to increase."
They thank her and head out to the road.
Aggie says, "You're welcome back any time!"
Outside it is a sunny morning. The air is hot and humid, with a slight breeze.
The group sees wildflowers among the tall grass as they take the path to Pedarox.

Aggie asks, "How did you sleep?"

They thank her and head out to the road.

Along the way they see dead animals along the side of the road, blood-soaked but with twin bite marks.
Rafael and Sr. Bridie investigate. They notice twin puncture marks at the neck: the typical sign of vampire activity.
Continuing, a little unsettled, they notice ahead in the road are two wild boars, fiercely attacking each other. After a quick conference the group decides Rafael will try to talk to the boars. Sr. Bridie casts Shield of Faith on Rafael. Rafael casts Speak with Animals and edges closer.
Rafael: What's the problem guys?
Boar 1: RAGE This is MY territory!
Boar 2: RAGE grrrr
Rafael: Did you see who was killing all these people?
Goosifer: Creatures!
Rafael: I mean, creatures?
Boar 1: The creatures along the path? Not us.
Rafael: Ok, carry on!
Boar 1 gets an edge in the fight, but rather than flee, boar 2 (the wild one) is still raging.
Rafael: Do you want help?
Boar 1: Yes, this one has been corrupted by the plains.
Rafael relays the conversation to the group, and they decide they will help the sane boar.
Initiative!

- Goosifer runs up to Rafael and prepares to defend him.
- Elysia runs up to the mad boar and slices it with her claws. She feels them charged with the power of the blessing, and they cut deep.
- Rafael hits the mad boar with an arrow.
- The mad boar gores Elysia hard with his tusk.
- The friendly boar backs up and charges into the mad boar, leaving it pretty hurt.
- Sr. Bridie calls sacred flame onto the mad boar, but it dodges.
- Goosifer tries to Scare the mad boar, but its rage is too great. He distracts it.
- Elysia takes advantage of the distraction and slashes the boar deeply with her claws.
- Rafael finishes him off with another arrow.
The friendly boar thanks them and leaves.
Sr. Bridie uses Cure wounds and restores Elysia's health. The group continues toward Pedarox.

Fire
As they walk, they see a small fire starting in the grasslands.
Rafael runs over to try to stomp it out. As he gets there he suddenly notices that the fire is actually a large creature! It swipes at him with a flaming fist. He reacts with absorb elements but is still burned.
Initiative!

- Goosifer dashes forward and distracts the elemental.
- It attacks Rafael again, more fire.
- He disengages and moves as far away as he can.
- Sr Bridie casts Aid and says, "We can just run away!" Everyone agrees.
- Elysia runs towards Pedarox.
- Goosifer follows closely.
- The elemental floats over to Rafael and attacks, but it doesn't connect.
- Rafael, seeing how fast it moved, gets out his swords, slashing it twice.
- Sr. Bridie realizes Rafael is still fighting, and hits the elemental with sacred flame.
- Elysia sprints back near Rafael.
- Goosifer uses mage hand to pat out a patch of fire (and gets inspiration for creative thinking).
- The elemental slaps at Rafael, but misses. It moves next to Elysia and Sr. Bridie.
- Rafael gets a crit with one blade due to flanking with Sr. Bridie, but it dodges the follow up.
- Sr. Bridie channels Radiance of the Dawn, blasting it with radiant energy. It looks hurt. She moves away. The elemental burns her as she leaves.
- Elysia slashes it with her claws.
- Goosifer keeps slapping out the flames. It looks like this hurts the elemental, just a little bit.
- It flares up with flames, burning Rafael badly. He's near death.
- With a final slash Rafael finishes off the elemental.
The fire is still spreading. After some brief attempts to contain the flames, the group realizes it is a losing battle. They rush down the road as Sr. Bridie casts cure wounds on Rafael. They find a spot just off the road to take a short rest.
City
They resume their walk to Pedarox. Getting closer, they see a blood-red river that runs from a cave and into the city.
Dominating the city, on a hill sits an ancient crystal castle.
The air smells of pine, sulphur, and blood. There is a mist in the air.
Just inside the city walls they see Misty Mountain Tavern. They decide to go in.
The atmosphere inside is cozy. It's nearly empty of customers at the moment. The bartender is a muscular half-elf woman with long blonde hair.
She asks, "Can I get you anything?"
They get four meads. As they chat, they tell about the mad boar they fought. The bartender says, "Legend is if you are stuck in the storm too long the rain makes you angry. Anger begets anger. It's a good thing you didn't run into the dragon!"
Rafael asks about the river's color. The barkeep explains that the red river is the town's "lifeblood". The color comes from minerals in the water from its underground source. It's perfectly safe.
She introduces herself, "By the way, I'm Lysandra."
"I'm Rafael, this is Goosifer."
"Elysia."
"Sr. Bridie, nice to meet you."
Rafael: We were warned about the full moon coming up, something about it being dangerous at night?
Lysandra: I don't know about moon phases, this mist hangs around the town all the time.
Rafael: When did it start?
Lysandra: Only recently.
Meads are handed out, silvers collected.
Lysandra comments: "We don't get much travelers. Residents go missing, turn up again not themselves, with an unquenchable thirst.
We used to be a quaint little town. People keep secrets now, stay out at night."
Rafael asks, "Has anything changed recently?"
"Nothing specific, I know priestess Seline, the main priestess in the temple nearby, is trying to break this curse.
Rafael asks, "Has anyone who returned explained what happened to them?"
"They seem ashamed, or depressed. They won't say."
As she answers she's holding a short necklace she wears, fiddling with it. It has a ruby pendant.
Rafael asks, "Is there a story with that necklace?"
She explains it was gift from her father, as protection.
Rafael offers, "If we find out what's happening here we'll let you know. And if I come back all cagey and ashamed don't take no for an answer, make me explain it."
The group rents three rooms.
Before bed Rafael explains to Goosifer that in the dojo he had seven predecessors, pets that died to Rafael's hunger.
Goosifer is forgiving, but needs to process it. He sleeps in the room with Sr. Bridie.
